The name Burgenland is derived from three former counties, all of which now lie outside Austria's borders. Wieselburg, Eisenburg, Pressburg, and Ödenburg are now part of the neighboring countries of Hungary and the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, Burgenland is home to numerous historic buildings that are known internationally. First and foremost is Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, which became famous primarily through the composer Joseph Haydn. But Lockenhaus Castle, Schlaining Castle, and Güssing Castle are also places with a very special charm. A visit is always worthwhile, as there are fascinating stories, magnificent views, and the occasional surprise to discover at every turn.

The local ruins also provide impressive backdrops. They are not only a popular destination or starting point for adventurous hikes, but also filming locations for Hollywood blockbusters. Some scenes from the film “The Three Musketeers” were filmed here in Landsee in 1993. The Landsee Castle Ruins are also among the best-preserved castle ruins in all of Europe and are one of the most famous landmarks of the Mittelburgenland–Rosalia region.

Take an exciting trip into the past, into the world of the Knights Templar in Lockenhaus, magical events at Forchtenstein Castle, and noble families in Esterházy Palace or castle Güssing. The old walls and noble rooms provide an insight into the rich work and cultural achievements of many centuries. Many historic sites are also used as event venues. Concerts, readings, and children's programs are held here regularly. Come on in and take a journey through the centuries in Burgenland.
